First taste of MAPICDigital Manager
Having never attended MAPIC I thought the dedicated retail environment would be both refreshing and informative and the experience kicked off immediately when sitting next to a friendly gentleman called Clive Woodger from SCG London. Clive’s business specialises in brand experiences something not too far off from Innesco’s own services. We shared our views about many things on the flight, in particular we discussed emerging and future markets in Russia, Kazakstan and Africa respectively.
On leaving the plane and whilst collecting our luggage from the carousel, I realised I was standing next to an old friend Andrea Carpenter, a property marketing expert who edited EuroProperty around the time I first joined Jones Lang LaSalle. Just shows you what a small world the industry can be.
It was then onto getting ‘the round’ in early doors with pre-MAPIC drinks in Cannes. Our lively opening event was attended by a modest crowd of around 100 people throughout the evening from all areas of the retail sector as well as property journalists from across Europe and the MAPIC news team.
Now a regular venue for the Innesco annual drinks, the popular Morrison’s Irish Bar sits perfectly off the Rue d’Antibes, one of the town’s main retail strips that runs parallel with Boulevard de la Croisette. Needless to say it was very chilled and relaxing with colleagues and industry friends old and new catching up the night before MAPIC 2012. Guests arrived around 8.30pm and I was keen to be at the door for the ‘meet and greet’ to get up to speed with new faces. Whilst playing host, the mix of nationalities that attended was quite a surprise, it really drove home just how international our firm is.
As well as some good old gossip and banter, some of the subjects I discussed with guests included performance of secondary town centres, town versus out of town development, the family “day-out” experience at super malls etc. All being covered in some way at MAPIC this week forming a great line up of topics.
Following the successful party and seeing off almost all guests, by 1am the route home was slightly sidetracked due to the appeal of a lovely boutique turkish eatery that served succulent roast lamb with fresh salad and a variety of condiments (some spicy) all wrapped up in fresh flat bread. The perfect reward at the end of a busy evening!
This was my first taste of Cannes and MAPIC… Next stop is a full day at the conference followed by CBRE champagne reception tonight, then onto an intimate Innesco dinner with guests from Westfield, John Ryan of MAPIC News, Mark Roberts and Natasha Southwick of JLL, and Mia Hunt of Shopping Centre Magazine!
