White Rose Shopping Centre signs six in three months

White Rose Shopping Centre, Leeds’ leading out-of-town shopping centre, owned by Land Securities (client), has signed six diverse brands over the last three months – Tessuti, Yours, Pizza Express, Smiggle, EE and Schuh – all of which will be open in time for Christmas. The new lettings total more than 20,000 sq ft (1,858 sq m) of retail and leisure space, and reinforce the huge demand for space from brands in the continually strong-performing shopping centre.

Tessuti, owned by JD Sports Fashion PLC, combines top menswear and sports brands provided at their standalone stores Tessuti and Scotts. Unveiled by the retailer earlier this year, the concept offers both premium and mid-market labels, such as Hugo Boss, Lacoste and Adidas at its 3,900 sq ft (362 sq m) unit with a further 1,607 sq ft (149 sq m) mezzanine. Meanwhile Smiggle, the popular stationery store, will take 1,000 sq ft (93 sq m) for its second store in Yorkshire, continuing its UK expansion by targeting the top shopping locations in Britain.

This latest batch of signings, announced after the receipt of outline planning approval for the centre’s 65,000 sq ft (6,038 sq m) leisure extension, illustrates the consistently strong demand for retail space in White Rose Shopping Centre. The retail asset has performed consistently well since opening in 1997, due to its unrivalled location, accessibility and extremely high conversion rates.

Yours Clothing, the women’s fashion trader, has opened in 1,999 sq ft (186 sq m), plus 647 sq ft (60 sq m) of mezzanine space. Pizza Express will join the shopping centre’s recently remodelled food court, The Balcony, in a 2,285 sq ft (212 sq m) unit, adding to an increasingly impressive dining offer at the centre.

Footwear retailer, Schuh, and mobile network operator, EE, have both relocated to take larger units at the shopping centre following exceptional trading in their existing stores. Schuh has signed for a 4,832 sq ft (449 sq m) unit with a 1,614 sq ft (150 sq m) mezzanine, whilst EE has introduced their new flagship concept in 1,665 sq ft (155 sq m), with a 707 sq ft (66 sq m) mezzanine.

Warren Thompson, Group Acquisitions Manager at JD Sports Fashion PLC, commented, “White Rose Shopping Centre’s dominance in the marketplace, attractive customer base and appetite for quality retail brands makes it an ideal location for our newest concept; Tessuti. We have been highly selective where we place the brand, but the sales and footfall figures that White Rose exhibits year-on-year made it a natural choice.”

Rob Jewell, Portfolio Director at Land Securities, added, “The addition of these in-demand retailers reinforces Land Securities’ commitment to supply our customers with a shopping and dining experience that is both well rounded and exciting. Signing six tenants in just three months demonstrates White Rose’s exceptional reputation amongst retailers and leisure operators.”

JLL acted for Land Securities. Harper Dennis Hobbs acted for Smiggle and Schuh, Leeds- based Barker Proudlove for Pizza Express, and Savills for EE. Tessuti and Yours Clothing acted for themselves.

All mezzanine spaces are ancillary.
