Reflections from MAPIC 2026: Why Destinations Matter More Than Ever
Sunshine on the Croisette, a tenth year supporting MAPIC, and a programme that put placemaking, mixed-use development and experience-led destinations front and centre.

The event opened under glorious sunshine on the Croisette, with Monday and Tuesday providing the perfect backdrop for deal-making, relationship building and industry debate. While the weather turned more typically autumnal on the Wednesday, the energy and optimism inside the Palais remained undiminished.
What stood out most this year was the continued shift in discussion almost away from retail as a standalone asset class and towards retail as a critical component of destination-making. Across various panels in the 2026 programme, meetings and award-winning projects, the themes of placemaking, mixed-use development, urban regeneration and experience-led environments were consistently front and centre, and that shone through.
The industry's most successful destinations are no longer defined solely by tenant mix or footfall. They are increasingly judged by their ability to create vibrant places where people want to spend time, connect with others and experience something memorable. And we understand it all better with significant shifts in data quality and use. Retail remains central to that equation, but it is now part of the much broader ecosystem that of course includes leisure, food and beverage, culture, hospitality, residential and public realm.
This year's MAPIC Awards provided further evidence of that evolution. Congratulations to all this year's winners, particularly Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield (URW), whose projects continue to demonstrate how innovative thinking, customer experience and destination-led strategies can redefine the role of retail real estate.
For Innesco, MAPIC 2026 was particularly significant as it marked our tenth year supporting the event through international PR, social media management, content creation and live event communications. Over the past decade, we have had the privilege of helping tell the stories behind one of the world's most influential real estate gatherings, working alongside organisers, clients, media partners and industry leaders from across Europe, the Middle East and beyond. Watching MAPIC evolve during that period, including through the pandemic, has been fascinating - but what has remained constant is its ability to bring together the people shaping the future of places.
I am immensely proud of the Innesco team. Delivering an event of this scale requires months of planning, stakeholder management, media engagement, content production and real-time execution. Their professionalism, creativity, commitment and ability to perform under pressure were exceptional throughout the week.
A heartfelt thank you to our clients, partners, journalists, content creators and the MAPIC team for another successful event.
As conversations continue long after Cannes has emptied and the stands have been dismantled, the strongest takeaway from MAPIC 2026 is perhaps the simplest: destinations that combine commercial success with genuine human experience will continue to define the future of our industry.
